Joe A. Avarista studied photography at the Art Institute of Boston. He subsequently served a nine year apprenticeship with a master wood sculptor, Armand Lamontagne. A life-long fascination with clothing, led him to design and execute a series of sculptures of jackets, ballet slippers and chef outfits. These pieces were then painted by the sculptor to take on a super-realistic appearance.
In addition he has carved lifesized figures including Native Americans, a Madonna and Child, and historic personages such as Thomas Wilson Dorr, leader of a rebellion in 19th century Rhode Island. This sculpture stands outside the Rhode Island Senate Chamber in the State Capitol in Providence, RI.
